Lawnside Kitchen
This 1910 home contained a series of dysfunctional, undersized rooms: side entry, powder room, kitchen, dining. Our task was to better accommodate all of these functions, and make the house work for a busy family.
In our clients’ words: “Our completely renovated kitchen, powder room, and mudroom has many beautiful touches and our style incorporated in a way that fits the rest of our home, while also being unique and so well designed. Equally appreciated is the functionality for our growing family. The kitchen has many zones and counter areas for all the tasks. The walnut pieces, gunmetal fixtures, the new lighting, and the fun powder room are a few of our favorite design aspects.”
When we opened up walls, we took care to make the new structure disappear (using flush beams and other techniques.) We also ensured that we left plenty of wall space for cabinetry and shelving, and to celebrate the charm of the older home. We replaced and repaired different building components that were past their life cycle, such as windows and floors.
With finishes, we used a dark blue to create focal points and a light blue-gray to create moments of visual breaks - you can see this play out on the tiles, cabinets, walls. For fixtures and the sink, we chose gunmetal, to add a richness to the palette.
Then, our special ingredient: touches of walnut, reappearing in different forms. For example, we custom designed and fabricated a pair of corner shelves, tucked a pair of wall sconces within the large window span, custom made a giant slab for the island, and custom applied a band around the hood cover - all in walnut.
We also ensured that each adjacent space had its unique style (washes of teal in the mudroom, black and white in the powder room, pops of yellow in the dining) while all of them connect to the kitchen (the new heart of the home) as a warm, organic, welcoming whole.
Every functional need is treated as one more creative opportunity to further develop the color and material palette. Best of all, neighbors can now wave hello through the window, walk through the back door right into the kitchen, take a seat at the island and enjoy spontaneous visits with the family.
